African Cultural Week Wrap-Up and Masters’ Collective Series

Farewell, African Cultural Week!

As the dust begins to settle on the whirlwind adventure that was African Cultural Week, we begin the process of reflecting on the past and preparing for the future. We experienced many joys and successes this week, with as many learning and growth opportunities.

To all of our friends and volunteers, we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!!
Words can’t express our deep appreciation for the artists with whom we had the pleasure of working with this week: Merlin Nyakam, Amara Kanté, Salif Sanou, Akra Soumah, Sabur Abdulai, Jacky Éssombé, Yoro Noukoussi, Kikeyambay, and Jordan Hanson. It was an honour to be able to work with all of you and we thank you for their patience, love, support and inspiration. A très bientot!
If you missed out on your chance to witness these world-class artists live, don’t worry, because we have some exciting news:

The Masters Will Return in September!

Amara Kanté and Akra Soumah will travel back to Victoria, BC to facilitate an exclusive workshop series! Now is your chance to experience three days of two-hour percussion workshops led by these masters of African rhythms.

A Masters’ Collective

amara-kante-masters-collective-workshopOn September 28th, 29th and 30th in Victoria and October 1st in Vancouver, you will have an opportunity to enjoy an intensive African Poly-Rhythm Workshop Series involving a selection of percussion instruments, including djembe and dundun. The Masters’ Collective Workshop Series will involve two hours of workshops per instrument per day and focus on traditional African rhythms, including the N’goron rhythm.

N’ Goron is a rhythm of the Senufo people who live in Ivory Coast and Burkina Faso. This rhythm was played after the initiation of the girls. While the rhythm is played, the young girls dance with calabashes on their heads.

You won’t want to miss this exclusive workshop series led by world-renowned, master percussionist (djembefola) Amara Kanté and our national dundunfola Akra Soumah! Tickets and signup details to follow. akra-soumah-dundun-masters-collective-workshop

Do you want to have these Masters visit your city? We have visited Vancouver, Sydney, Nanaimo with rave reviews. If you have a location in mind that would be a good fit, we would love to share African poly-rhythms with your group. Contact us today to see if we can bring the Masters to you!

African Caribbean Spirit Night

That’s right friends, Spirit Night is back by popular demand! We will be closing the Masters’ Collective Workshop Series with a Spirit Night on the evening of September 30th. This year, (at Rachael’s urgent request!) our Spirit Night will have a African and Caribbean theme featuring some of our (her) favourite island foods and a local DJ playing music that is guaranteed to make you feel irie!

We can’t wait to see you! Walk good!

One love,
