Leaders in the Victoria community and beyond are extending their support for the Victoria African & Caribbean Cultural Society’s trio of “Black History Month – Canada 150” celebrations, which start on February 4th.

Funded by the Government of Canada – Financé par le gouvernement du Canada.

Supported by the Government of Canada, the events have garnered an official endorsement from the Honourable Premiere Christy Clark, as well as confirmed attendance from Major Nils Jensen and Councilor Chris Coleman. Shaw TV will also be on site to film the 4th Annual Black History Month Community Recognition Awards & Closing Gala on February 25.

Black History Month Kick Off: Drum & Dance Festival

Saturday, February 4, 2017  | The Dave Dunnet Community Theatre | 1-9 p.m.

A mosaic of cultural festivities including drum and dances workshops, African and Caribbean food, and a live evening show featuring world-class artists Naby Camara and Jacky Ésombé.

Film Screening & Panel Discussion: The Colour of Beauty

Saturday, February 18, 2017 | École Victor-Brodeur | 3-8 p.m.

A free screening and panel discussion of Elizabeth St. Philip’s short documentary, The Colour of Beauty, which examines racism in the fashion industry. Light dinner will be served.


Black History Month Community Recognition Awards & Closing Gala

February 25, 2017 | Cedar Hill Recreation Center Auditorium | 6 p.m. – 12:30 a.m.

A formal gala celebrating members of Victoria’s Black community who have distinguished themselves in the public, private and community sectors.
